Something Wicked This Way is Coming...
Holly and Kelly: This will be a post under constant editing, as a LOT of bad stuff is about to go down in a matter of hours...
As of 11:30 today, Berea cancelled classes and work, instructed non-essential faculty and staff to head home, and told students to seek shelter as soon as possible. A massive storm cell is heading our way. There is a very strong possibility of tornadoes (something that hasn't happened in about 15 years). Right now we are watching the Weather Channel and constantly updating our Facebooks and Twitter feeds to keep our friends and family back home informed. All is calm at the moment. We are safe.
K: Currently is it 12:56 PM. The big nasty storms are in Paducah, Kentucky (about 5 hours away from us). Holly and I are camping out in the lobby in front of the TV with the weather channel on.
H: 1:02PM. My roommate Amanda pants just got accepted to study abroad in Austria this summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
H: 1:07PM. The National Weather Service in Louisville issued a Tornado Watch in our area until 9pm tonight.
K: 1:30 PM. Temporarily re-located to our favorite coffee joint for afternoon pick-me ups. A French-Mexican roast coffee for me and a Thin Mints latte for Holly. Sunny skies outside. Um...
H: 2:55PM. Skies are fluctuating between sunny and cloudy, but all is still relatively calm. Kelly is working on nursing stuff. I'm filling out a job application for an Admissions position at the college. Keep your fingers crossed!!!
K: 4:20 PM. Skies are getting darker and the wind is starting to pick up. Tornado warnings are issued in Fort Knox, Kentucky (about 2-3 hrs. away from here) and in Maryville, Indiana (north of Louisville, which is about an hour and a half away from here). We are sitting vigilantly by the window and checking the weather cautiously. We're getting ready; I think they'll be here soon.
K: 4:29 PM. Storm sirens are going off now as I type this. Severe thunderstorm warning underway.
H: 4:49PM. Tornado warning siren has been sound. We are now in the basement. Yes...tornado warning. Will update as soon as something changes.
H: Just as "all clear" was said, a second Tornado Warning siren sound. We're back in the basement. It is quite cloudy and windy outside. Stay tuned. And we're ordering new earrings!
K: Campus security just emailed us. An email was just sent out; a tornado has been spotted IN Berea. Yes, IN Berea. We are stuck here until further notice. I'm calling my mom.
H: 6:16PM. A 6:15 tornado warning has now expired. Another tornado warning has been issued and is set to expire at 6:45. There have been several reports of tornadoes touching down IN Berea, including a few that were spotted on campus. As far as I know no one has been hurt. We're still in the basement, still waiting.
K: 6:51PM. A fourth tornado warning has been issued until 7:15 PM tonight. In addition, we are also under a flash flood warning until 9:45 PM tonight. We're getting a little restless, hungry, hot (you cram 40+ girls in a tiny basement) and cranky. Mostly just because we're hungry. Getting kind of tired of eating animal crackers and fruit snacks. Two girls just walked in with Chinese take-out. Um, really? And the night in the basement of Talcott continues...
H: It's now just before 8:30 at night. The "all clear" for the last time was given about an hour ago. Like a cookie-cutter disaster movie, us bleary basement refugees braved the balmy weather to the outside world...for FOOD! It was yummy. I am full of food and I am blessed to be reporting good news: no injuries, no significant damage (that I'm aware of). Thanks for keeping up with us. :)
K: 8:27PM. All is well in the world of Berea again. It's quite breezy out and it has stopped raining. After being stuck in that small basement for so long I was happy to get out. Me, sis and a friend of mine braved the lack thereof severe weather and gorged ourselves in pizza, pasta and chicken wings! As for now, I am settled back in my 2nd floor cove, sipping on Sierra Mist and listening to wonderful music. Thanks for keeping up with our continuous updates and checking in on us. I am happy to report that we are very much alive and well. :]
