30 Days of Sherlock: Your favorite thing about the show

Holly: It's taken me a few days to think about this, and I'm glad that it's the last part of this writing challenge, because there are many, many things that I like about the show, so to go as far as to pick just one is a bit ludicrous.

For starters, the writing is practically flawless: witty, sharp, thought-provoking.  Sherlock's deductions are delivered at almost break-neck speed (Ok, I suppose that's more of the acting, and less of the writing, but still...).  There are so many great lines.  Second, the characters are so believable, especially John.  He's that one friend you'd want to have on your side, the one friend that everyone wants and the one friend that everyone aspires to be.

Finally, the entire premise of the show is what keeps me watching, and Kelly has mentioned it already, but it bears repeating:  You start out with a lonely, down-on-his-luck Afghanistan veteran, and add in a brilliant, almost mechanic and robotic, almost too-brilliant-for-his-own-good "consulting detective", and bring them together.  It's almost slapstick, if you're on the outside looking in.  But what happens throughout the duration of the series (so far) is almost magic; they start out merely as roommates, flatmates, but at the end of the second series, they've transformed into friends.  Friends?? Really?  Even Sherlock says it himself, "I don't have friends."  Something I have learned through this six-episode arc is that friendship, at its very essence, is more powerful than any mind and is able to break through any barriers.  It can surprise you, it can hurt you, but at the end of the day, it's necessary.  It's vital for life.  It keeps our very human side in check.  Even Sherlock realizes this at his last moments: that we're all humans on this road called life, and we all need someone.  Friends protect people.  And that, my friends, is how TV should be.

Kelly: I suppose I'll get a crack on this. It's 7:23AM and I'm awake. I'll be heading out for more job orientating here in a bit. But anywho, there's too many things I like about the show. If I had to pick one universal thing I like, it would be the dynamic of Sherlock and John. I must give credit to the writers of the show, because they do such an excellent job of writing this transformation that occurs between the two. A lonely, invalided Afghan war Army vet meets this cold, collected blunt consulting detective and then they become friends. That's the beauty of any friendship really, is that often it occurs between the two unlikeliest of people. These two people go from hardly knowing one another to John being the one Sherlock calls as he about to face his demise. And should I mention that this all occurs within 18 months. Also, it's realistic. Now what do I mean by that? The two meeting of people, getting to know each other, etc. I feel like that in a lot of shows it seems rushed or a bit fake, especially in romantic relationships. It seems it's like two people meet, make out then sleep together. Uh....?

So how does that happen? How does any friendship happen? Love. No...not THAT kind of love. Like sis said, it's believable. It's real. You watch it and you say "that's what friends do for each other." Somewhere on the way side, friends come and go but the good ones, the really good ones, will stick with you. And whether you know each other for 18 months or 18 years, that's just how it goes. And that's what happens with Sherlock and John; they go from being strangers to being each other's wing men, without actually saying "Hey, I'm your wing man." Plus, Martin and Benedict have EXCELLENT chemistry! I think if it were any other two actors, it wouldn't quite be the same.

30 Days of Sherlock: Free for all #5

Kelly: In the original 30 day prompt we've been following, today's topic is what our favorite thing about Sherlock is. However, using my sound judgment, I thought that would be nice to wrap up the 30 day challenge with that. So today's prompt is actually tomorrow's, which is yet ANOTHER free for all!!! Before what I decide what I want to talk about/post a silly picture of, I just want to say that I have really enjoyed doing this 30 day challenge. It's been a bit random figuring out when to post our entries, with sis working and me orientating to my new job, but we wouldn't have it any other way. So fear not; we are still writing, but sometimes it's taken us a bit longer to get things actually posted. Ok...now what to talk about?

I read something on Facebook that there's going to be a new villain for the 3rd season. Oooh. Don't ask me to remember his name, because I can't, but yeah. Pretty exciting. Also, Mark Gatiss posted on his Twitter account a few days ago that last week they finished the read through but that today they're starting shooting on the last episode of the new season TODAY! Which means that in UK time they're probably already almost done/done for the day. According to the commentaries on the 1st season DVD set it takes about 4 weeks to shoot each episode. So we'll have a new season finale in our midst by the end of next month it seems. Heck, I'm just really interested in the fact that in a few months we'll see how Sherlock survived his death. I have a few theories, which for the time being I will keep to myself. I doubt any of them are right, but a girl can speculate, right? And Pandora just yelled at me because I'm not being attentive to them. Oops. Anyway, I feel like I'm just babbling nonsense now, but please do forgive me. I'm a bit brain dead from job orientating. All right all right ALL RIGHT. Here's another silly meaningless picture. Have at it.

Holly: So I just looked up this new bad dude on Facebook.  He goes by Charles August Magnussen and seriously...there's a pic on Facebook and he is creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy lookin'.  Hopefully he'll be on the same level as Moriarty, because he was brilliant.  Utterly sinister and psychotic, but brilliant.

Anyway, I too have also enjoyed this writing challenge.  Sometimes we like things and we really don't know why we do.  This has kind of helped me to see that.  More on this....tomorrow! :)

30 Days of Sherlock: Character you'd least like to be like

Holly: I don't really like this question, because I think, in essence, even the "worst" characters...we have a part of them.  I know some days I'm inept and silly, like Anderson.  I'm brash and distant, like Mycroft.  But I'm certain they will have redemptive qualities in the upcoming season.  So there.  It is so.

Meanwhile, I'm having a cup of jo.  You should have one too.

Kelly: This is mean. I like everyone in the show. I mean, Anderson gets on my nerves and Sally always doubts Sherlock, but I feel that that happens to all of us sometimes. Sometimes we get on each other's nerves; heck, most times I get on my own nerves! Sometimes we doubt people, especially ourselves. But just because those characters possess those characteristics doesn't mean that I don't want to be like them. That's all. Ok. I'm going to clean the garage now.

30 Days of Sherlock: Character you'd most like to be

Kelly: I'm sleepy, ya'll, so bear with me.

Anywho, I would really like to be John, because I feel that I am like him already. Loyal, trusting, friendly, a bit blunt at times, and of course a medical man (well....I'm not a man. Obviously). He's definitely the kind of guy I would want on my side in a fight. I pride myself in being a good friend, or at least trying to. I'm very understanding of circumstances. If a friend of mine were to walk up to me, look me in the eye and say "I hate you, Kelly" and actually mean it, of course I'd be upset and hurt, but I wouldn't care about that person any less. When I'm a friend, I'm a friend for life. I feel that John is that way too; shoot, he watched his best friend die right in front of him, well...when I say die.

Ok, that's all I've got in my hat for now. I'm going to bed. Good night all.

Holly: I don't know....I suppose, in a way, I'd sort of like to be like everyone.  There's John, the loyal doting friend.  I already think I am a good friend, but I feel like John just gets it, you know?  There's Sherlock...he is utterly brilliant.  I would love to be able to exercise my mind as sharply as he does.  There's Mrs. Hudson, the mother figure.  I remember being a motherly figure of sorts to my younger college friends.  I feel like I look out for those around me.  There's Molly, the sweet gentle soul who usually works quietly in the background, but comes through when everyone least expects it.  I pride myself on acting with integrity and always try my best to be of service to others.

Ok, that's not everyone.  That's four out of a complex list of Sherlock characters.  But you get my drift.

30 Days of Sherlock: Favorite Sherlock actress (or another actor)

Holly: Ladies and gentlemen, THIS IS OUR 200TH POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, shameless plug done.  Today we're going to shift our focus to the leading man of Sherlock, none other than Mr C (Yes, we call him Mr C).  I think I first saw him in "Amazing Grace", though I didn't put the name to the face.  Then we didn't see him for a while after that.  Actually, I think we were just getting into Sherlock and then when he first came on I practically shouted "HEY HE WAS IN AMAZING GRACE!"  By the way, if you haven't seen Amazing Grace, you really need to.  He doesn't have a large role in it but it's still a very good movie.  Anyway, after I saw him in Sherlock, I was...impressed, to say the least, so I wanted to see more of his work.  We've seen pretty much everything he's in.  Out of his stuff, I love Third Star.  Unfortunately, it isn't available in the US, so you have to watch it online, but it's a really powerful and beautiful story.  Kelly posted the trailer below.  Another short film of his that isn't really well known is Inseparable.  It's about.....well, it's about twins, so naturally, Kelly and I love it.  There's very little dialogue and it's just over 10 minutes long, but never in my life have I seen a movie tell so strong a story with no words.  I've posted a link below- I dare you to not be moved or touched in some way.

Something I really adore about him is his modesty.  If you've ever watched him in interviews...he's so successful, he's not much older than us, but he doesn't let it get to his head.  He loves his fans and he loves what he does.  And he's good at it.  One more thing...ladies, he's single!  I love that about him too.  Way too often celebs that break up are so quick to jump into another relationship; it's like whiplash, almost.  I applaud you, Mr C.  The right one will come along at the right time! :)

Inseparable (2007)

Kelly: In light of yesterday's post, I think that it's only fair to talk about the other Sherlock leading man, none other than Benedict Cumberbatch, whose name is probably just as great (if not greater) than Sherlock Holmes. Like Martin, I recognized Mr. C (my nickname. Hey, you need some shortcuts every now and then in life) in the movie Amazing Grace. In fact, when we first started watching the show, I remember saying "it's William Pitt!!!" Since then, I have seen much much more of his work, which again, as I mentioned in yesterday's post, is something I recommend doing with any actor/actress you fancy. Get to know them in something other than what they're "known" for. I'd have to say now that I've seen some of his other work, my favorite non-Sherlock role of his is in a movie called Third Star. It's a beautiful movie about friendship, struggles, but it comes with a very sad ending. I've posted a link for the trailer at the end. Unfortunately, this movie is not being released in the states (I watched it online). And what I like about Mr. C in the movie is that he plays his character so well. And like Martin, I think you have to know what that struggle feels like; sorry, trying not to ruin too many of the details. PLEASE see this movie!! While I have not experienced what the main character has, I think we can all attest to the fact that we've been there to see friends struggle with...something.

It has been a privilege and in my opinion an honor to explore some of these two actor's other roles in their career, and my goodness the writers of Sherlock could not have picked a more perfect ensemble. EVERYONE in the show is great!

30 Days of Sherlock: Favorite Sherlock actor

Note: Today, we would like to dedicate this post to our dear friend Brian.  Eight years ago today he was killed in a car accident.  He was supposed to graduate high school with our brother.  He was a truly remarkable and wonderful friend who gave the best hugs and knew how to make anyone laugh.  We miss you, Brian.

Kelly: All I can say is thank God that I am not the same person that I was when I was that unsure, angry and upset 15 year old. Anyway, thanks to the website Sherlockstuff, I've been able to track my favorite Sherlock actor (and one of my favorite favorite actors anyway) and see some of his other work. He's been involved in a variety of other roles, in rom coms, historical flicks and of course, Bilbo Baggins in the upcoming Hobbit film trilogy.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I am tipping my hat off this morning to Martin Freeman. I've only known the name for about a year, but did recognize him in Shaun of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and Love Actually before I knew who he was. It was right around this time last year that we got into Sherlock as well; if I'm not mistaken we viewed Reichenbach on this day last year. When I saw Martin's performance in that episode, and seeing the real hurt and numbness that comes upon finding out your worst fear, that's when I fell in love with him not only as an actor but as John Watson. If you have never experienced loss before, you don't know what that feels like. I don't know if Martin has, but I have. And I remember watching the episode and thinking "that is EXACTLY how I felt when I heard about Brian." And just like that, I was 15 years old again.

So if you haven't seen some of Martin's other work, I would highly recommend it. I would recommend The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy, The Good Night, and Nativity! (those are my favorites that he's in). 

Holly: I too also love Martin Freeman.  And not just because he's John Watson (Seriously, you crazy Sherlock fans.....seriously.  Watch his other stuff.  He's so much more than that.  I seriously doubt he went through the training and schooling he did just to be known by "Jawn"...he's Martin Freeman! Ok, ending rant now).  I love him for his versatility.  I've seen the majority of his work, and every performance of his is completely seamless.  I especially love him in Nativity; he portrays the crochety Scroogy primary school teacher so well.  He's so believable! Like Kelly, I also recommend her recommendations, but I also recommend a comedy show called Bruiser.  He's quite funny!

Another good scene of his is from "Swinging with the Finkels."  Unfortunately, I gave the movie a half hour before I quit watching it, so I skipped to the end and ohhhhh....it's so sweet.  That last scene!!!! I'm not even going to post it here; you can find it on YouTube.

My recommendation for any actor you really like: watch their other works.  Branch out of your box a little.  I guarantee that your respect for him/her will increase exponentially.  And then you can daydream about meeting them and having an intellectual conversation with them, instead of something like "OHMYGLOB I'M YOUR BIGGEST FAN AND I LOVE SHERLOCK AND YOU'RE SO GOOD AS DR WATSON AND akljdgflkajdsgbkand.bkn.adjf...gkajewoituaoweut."  Catch my drift?

Holly: Kelly posted something on our Sherlock pinterest board about some things that are coming in the new season.  Something I'm looking forward to now (used to be the wedding) is the John/Sherlock meet-up.  And I directly quote from the brilliant evil genius himself (sorry Moffat, but you are evil.  And brilliant):

"...this is his favorite moment of Sherlock that he has made.  He states, 'It is the showstopper of the episode.' He believes this is what fans will want more than how did Sherlock survive."

Well duh! Because all those theories out there are going to be totally bogus! I'm ready for the aftermath!!!!

Kelly: Today I'm going to use my free for all avenue to talk about how excited I am for Season 3 to start! Though we still have until next year to see it, I am have total faith that it will be awesome! This past week, during the annual Comic Con in San Diego, thousands of people got to view a clip from the second episode of the third season. That clip, as I have read on multiple occasions, will not be viewed on the web. So us who didn't go did not and will not get to see it. And in a write up about the event, the clip was about the wedding that will occur in that episode. Sigh.

Yeah, I'm a bit bummed, but that's ok. We'll get our turn to see it and it will be so worth it!! I'm actually a bit on the flip side and sort of glad I didn't get to see it; I want to be surprised! Good things come to those who wait.

Kelly: Holly's below is one of my favorites most definitely. The dialogue between the two of them afterwards is absolutely hilarious as well. My choice is one that a fan created; sort of like a trailer for the first two seasons. It's really well done, a bit corny but I absolutely love it. Plus, I'm a big fan of the choice of music! I have more favorites, many favorites, but I like this one.

Holly and Kelly: I think it was actually Kelly who found this, or maybe we had a friend show it to us.  Either way, it's brilliantly well done.  Whoever runs this and originally came up with it is basically a genius.  They really captured how it might have looked, and it even contains posts that were mentioned in the series.  We were really impressed with it.  Hopefully you will be too.

Now, obviously, nothing has been posted for a while, but we hope it picks back up again after Season 3 airs.

Kelly: A gif in Kelly's dictionary is an image that moves and repeats. I don't remember what "gif" stands for but you get the idea. Here's my favorite one. Someone has a webpage called "Shocking Blankets" and they do gifs and animations such as the one below. They're cute and amusing. This one is my favorite.

30 Days of Sherlock: Favorite canon reference/in joke

Holly and Kelly: Vatican cameos!

In "A Scandal in Belgravia", Sherlock yells this as sort of a signal word to John when they're about to be shot; they both duck, perform some super awesome slow-mo butt kicking, and are able to retrieve Irene Adler's precious camera phone from her safe.  Granted, we've seen each episode at least a half a dozen times, but when we first saw this one we were like "What did he say????"  We learned it was "vatican cameos" and, of course, had NO IDEA what that meant.  So we did what anyone would do, we looked it up, and we turned up some pretty clever results.

"Vatican cameos" was a term used in World War 2 when an armed person would enter a military base, and it was a signal for everyone to take cover and/or duck if necessary.  John was a former soldier and probably recognized this term, so he immediately took action once Sherlock spoke.  Pretty clever, huh?  "Vatican cameos" was also mentioned in an unknown story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (who wrote all the original Sherlock Holmes stories, for those of you who may or may not know).

30 Days of Sherlock: Character you are most like

Holly: While some days I do let my inner Sherlock come out, most of the time I feel like I'm most like John.  One of the most admirable and believable qualities I like most about John is that he is a friend for life.  As am I.  Kelly and I have discussed this many times; no matter where you end up in life, no matter how often we do or do not talk, no matter the choices you make, when I am your friend, I am your friend for good.  John also has a tough-as-nails, no-nonsense ambiance to him as well- sometimes I do too, especially when I'm motivated by something.  John is also fiercely loyal to Sherlock and has a heart, which we see come out often in the series.  I too have a big heart.  I think we should all be more like John.  :)

Kelly: Some days I feel like I am most like Sherlock. Stubborn, arrogant, a bit obnoxious, rude, blunt and abrupt. I don't want to listen to anyone, I do what I want and I blow people off. Then some days I feel like John; loving, caring, compassionate, listening, understanding, loyal and friendly. I can find something to love out of the most seemingly unlovable or questionable, like Sherlock. To be honest, I think that at times there's a bit of Sherlock in us. Yet other times I feel that there is a bit of John in us as well.

30 Days of Sherlock: Free for all #3

Kelly: Ya'll, I am so freaking tired it's not even funny. I started the paperwork for my new job today (!!!!) and ended up driving across town to get my new employee physical/drug test done too. Waited at work for 30 minutes, spent 20 minutes doing paperwork, drove 5 mins to the urgent care center, waited OVER AN HOUR to get my physical done, then left. I. AM. TIRED. I can't even think right now, like seriously. So please enjoy this picture.

Holly: I have no job-related complaints.  It's just hot out.  And humid.  Really really humid.

Kelly: Apparently Holly really likes the above picture. :) 

30 Days of Sherlock: A moment that made you cry

Holly: Reichenbach hits really close to home to me and Kelly.  She explains it much better than I can, but the conveying of reactions that John gives after Sherlock's "death" is very similar to what I personally felt after we lost our friend Brian, who was killed in a car accident.  John's reaction is so chilling- it's just numbness, blank.  That's how I was at first: I was just praying that it was some sort of joke, that he would just walk into the hallway and give me one of his trademark hugs.  But he didn't.  It really didn't hit me until his funeral.  Sherlock's "death" didn't really hit John until he saw his grave.

What really gets me in Reichenbach is what happens after John sees Sherlock's grave: he straightens up and puts on his soldier face and soldiers on.  I realize that eventually, that's what we all have to do after we lose someone close to us.  But for John, it's like he's accepted it already, even though at one point he pleads for Sherlock to not be dead.  Martin Freeman's entire performance those last few minutes of Reichenbach is just so powerful.  I dare you to watch it and not be affected by it.

Kelly: Ironically, the night that we watched Reichenbach was on the same night of the 7 year anniversary of a friend's passing. I did not know what was coming when I viewed the episode for the first time; all I knew was what my friends who were fans of the show told me, which was that we would hate the ending. But watching the dialogue between Sherlock and John on the roof was....powerful, to say the least. Then, John's reaction after watching his best friend die in front of his very eyes was not what I was expecting. I was expecting an outpouring of emotions, tears and frantic behavior. But all you saw was just a blank and numb appearing expression. He doesn't actually shed any tears until seeing Sherlock's grave. None of the dialogue affected me, but seeing that expression completely moved me to tears, because I have been there. I saw myself in John's face. And Martin did such an excellent job; I feel to pull off something so moving you have to put yourself in the role. You have to know what that feels like; to lose someone you care about. Holly and I watched the episode again rather recently and I had the same reaction, because I've continued to know what that feels like, after losing my Grandpa a little over two months ago. That pain, that hurt, is real. If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure Martin won a BAFTA for that episode; I know for the role of John Watson at least. Well deserving, if you ask me.

It's those actors and those performances that stand out from the rest. It's the genuine and realistic reactions, feelings, emotions and thoughts that stick in the back of your mind. In a parallel universe in my wildest dreams if I ever had the chance to meet Martin Freeman, I would say what I just wrote about. Good work, in my opinion, often goes unnoticed. And if you need further proof of how captivating the performance was, read this. A fan wrote a letter to Martin's brother the night after she viewed Reichenbach for the first time. Gave me goosebumps.

30 Days of Sherlock: A moment that made you squeal

Holly: I could probably think of quite a few if I had several hours to spare, but seeing as how I have to leave for work shortly, I will share the one that popped into my mind first.

It would probably have to be in Hounds when Sherlock tells John: "John, I don't have friends.  I've just got one."  That moment really brought Sherlock out of his box where he saw John merely as a sidekick, a blogger, and that shift in their relationship is both huge and unexpected.  :)

Kelly: Nap time over. Guess that's what happens when they suck a pint of blood out of you. Anyway, mine seems kind of silly, but in The Great Game John is at an actor's house seeking information. Out of nowhere a somewhat hideous hairless cat comes up to his lap. He seems apprehensive about it at first, but then becomes convinced that the cat was the cause of death in the victim they are investigating. It's not though, as Sherlock figures out what really happened, but it was cute to see John then cuddle with the kitty and try to get Sherlock in on thinking that the cat was involved too. Plus, as a cat mommy I naturally love cats. :)

30 Days of Sherlock: Favorite fan fic

Kelly: My name is Kelly Korb, and fan fiction does not appeal to me. First and foremost, it just doesn't interest me. Never really has. I'm sure there are some very well written works of fiction out there, should I just take the time to find them. However, most of the fan fiction that I hear about or read about what people are writing is just...nasty. Full of erotica, fantasies and sexual relationships. And most of these authors are young adult females probably around my age or younger, mostly the latter. Actually, to confess, I have read snippets of a few, and to be honest they're borderline unhealthy and somewhat creepy. If Benedict or Martin ever stumbled upon some of these, I surmise they would be rather uncomfortable. I was rather uncomfortable. And unfortunately, this is what today's culture is all about; even something as simple as a friendship, which is what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle intended for the Holmes/Watson relationship to be, has become distorted and twisted into perverse relationships beyond friendship. Not that I'm trying to bad mouth those who are interested in that sort of thing, but I feel in a way that it's tainting the intentions of Sir Arthur's work. Agree with me or not, but I do realize that this is a very one-sided opinion.

Holly: I will be the first to say I like writing.  I like being creative.  I used to write religiously as a kid.  I also respect those who wish to express their creative side.  However, I tend to ere on more of the tasteful side.  Having said that, I too have come across several Sherlock fictions.  I didn't find any of them tasteful.  Now if you're into fictional smut and that sort of stuff, then that's your business.  Personally, that's not my cup of jo, but like I said, who am I to judge?  But what surprises me the most about these fan fictions is the almost cult following that comes with them...women my age or younger just go beside themselves with these fics.  They can't get enough.  It's almost borderline unhealthy to me.  I love Sherlock just as much as the next girl, but I also have a life too...

I also view Sherlock and John relationship as strictly friendship.  I don't believe there's anything sexual about it, and I don't believe there needs to be.  I don't understand why or how it's become otherwise.

Call me old-fashioned, call me a tightwad, but if I ever get the opportunity to meet Benedict or Martin (LORD WILLING! lol), I would much prefer to have an intellectual conversation with them with a clear conscience.

30 Days of Sherlock: Something you'd like to see in Season 3

Kelly: There are quite a few things in the third season I would like to see. First being in the premiere. I want Sherlock to reveal that he is alive to John. Well we do know that is going to happen but here's how I want it to be done; I want John to stand there, beat the snot out of him, help him up, then hug him. Secondly, I would like to see Harry, John's sister (short for Harriet). You hear a little bit of her back story in the first season premiere, and you also know that they have an estranged relationship. I don't know; ever since I heard about her it's just something more and more I would like to see. I would also like to see more of Sherlock's back story; how he came to be the person that he is now. I think it would be interesting, but we'll see. We still have about 6 months until Season 3 airs, so let the speculating wands be raised!

Holly: In the original head canon, when Sherlock returns after the fall, John faints.  If Moffat and Gatiss do that......I don't know.  John is a soldier.  I personally want him to deck Sherlock and then hug him.  I want Sherlock's "resurrection" to be completely unexpected (although I'm not sure we will have to worry about that).  I also want Mycroft to have had a part in it.  He knows way too much.  haha.  I want to see more of Molly's character.  She's a really good character and a good asset to Sherlock.

Last, and definitely not least, Martin Freeman's real life life partner is cast in the third season.  As who, we do not know.  I do not want her to be Mary Morstan.  Way too obvious.  It would be great if she was Harry.  I will be very disappointed if she is cast as John's future wife.  Not that I think they are both terrible actors; they aren't; I've seen them work together and they have great chemistry (Obviously.)  But still...

I also do not want to wait until 2014 to see Season 3.  To each his own, though.  Guess we don't have a choice.  >:P

30 Days of Sherlock: A picture of your least-favorite character

Don't get us wrong, he probably means well, but most of the time, he's an idiot.  A complete and utter idiot.  And was anyone else super-creeped out in the unaired pilot by his beard? We were!  In real life he's probably a sweetheart, and Mr. C probably loves him to death.  Hopefully Anderson will redeem himself in the next season.  

30 Days of Sherlock: A photo of your favorite character.

Kelly: Listening to a bit of Beecake this morning as I write this post. If you've never heard of them, they're definitely worth a listen or two! Since Holly and I have the same favorite character, I figured I'd post a pic or two to vouch for the two of us. Enjoy!

Kelly: I have too many, but here's one of my favorites. This is classic Sherlock/John in my opinion, but the pic is definitely photo shopped in some way.

30 Days of Sherlock: A picture that makes you :(

Holly: A picture, they say, is worth a thousand words.  For me, there's literally a 10-second scene in Reichenbach that just kills me; it's John sitting alone in the flat after Sherlock's "death".  In this picture you can't tell, but in the scene he isn't wearing any shoes.  He isn't going anywhere, because there's nowhere to go.  It's ironic, actually...the series starts with him alone in his flat, and it sort of ends with him alone in the flat.

Kelly: I think someone painted this, photoshopped it or whatever, but it conveys a sad yet very powerful message. When Sherlock is about to plunge to his "death," he holds his hand out to John, who is standing on the street.
"Keep your eyes fixed on me."
John returns the hand extension, not knowing that his best friend is about to jump from the rooftop, until Sherlock says "this is my note. It's what people do, right?" Their conversation ends abruptly and Sherlock falls from the roof.
"Goodbye, John."

30 Days of Sherlock: A picture that makes you go :D

Kelly: This entirely sums up Sherlock. In a nutshell. Plus, this scene sequence in Belgravia is my favorite dialogue in the entire series! It's silly, ridiculous and hilarious. It just goes to show you that even though Sherlock is indeed brilliant, he has his Honey Badger moments. You also get to see a bit more of the brotherly relationship between Sherlock and Mycroft. When I first saw this I was like that is SO me and Holly!!!

Holly: Yes, that's really what it says in the description.  I like this picture.

From what I remember about it (I found it on Pinterest), this was taken from the Sherlock set.  I like this picture because they look so chill.  They look like more than just co-actors on a show; they look like friends.  Plus, Martin Freeman has coffee and I like that too.

30 Days of Sherlock: Whatever you like!

Holly: Today is just a free-for-all, so I will post a goofy picture.  Because I like pictures and I like goofy.

Kelly: I was watching The Great Game a few days ago and Yoda was being super squirrely.  She kept getting in the way of the TV so I couldn't see some of it. She then proceeded to jump ONTO the TV and was watching the screen too. I took this picture below and it is timed perfectly! It looks like Sherlock is looking at her. Enjoy!

30 Days of Sherlock: Favorite Ship

Kelly: Oh....this is interesting. For those of you who don't know what a "ship" is, it is a internet term for a relationship. No, not just a casual one but...you know. There are some crazy and insane Sherlock fans who write fanfic/make drawings on DevianArt or are like "Sherlock and John make such a cute couple!" Then of course there's the infamous "Johnlock" that this fandom has also started. And yes there are several jabs in the series that suggest that Sherlock and John might be gay.

Um....no.

In my opinion, these fans are completely missing the point. It seems in today's culture that TV shows and movies are OBSESSED with relationships and with the fairy tale ending "and they lived happily ever after." But what attracts me to the show isn't the fact that there might be some sort of "relationship" that goes on between Sherlock and John, but that there isn't. I don't see flirting, being in a relationship or anything like that. I see friendship and the love and beauty that comes from that. They look out for each other, they have each other's back, they meet in the most unlikely of circumstances. They have inside jokes, they solve crimes together, and yes, they do live together. Yes, people in relationships do all of the above as well, but friends do that too. It's just silly to me. That's all.

Holly:

30 Days of Sherlock: Favorite minor character

Holly: I had to think for a while about this one, but then it struck me later and now it's no surprise.

WARNING: spoilers revealed below if you've never watched.  Proceed with caution.

Molly Hooper, aka the pathologist at St. Barts.  Unfortunately, we don't see much of her in the series, but when we do see her she is always helping Sherlock.  Despite this, she does have to put up with a lot of his crap: forcing her to cancel plans, humiliating her at the Christmas party, etc.  Even when Sherlock reaches his near breaking point, she still asks him, with the utmost sincerity "What do you need?"  Sherlock is a bit brash toward her, but he does trust her, and always will.  I know for a fact that she had something to do with Sherlock faking his death.  I'm also looking forward to what Season 3 will bring for her.  I really hope we do see more of her.

Kelly: Molly is also one of my favorite minor character, but Lestrade is another favorite of mine too. He is so incredibly skeptical of Sherlock and his "abilities" but knows that without him Scotland Yard would not have been able to get anywhere in solving the many cases he summoned Sherlock's help for.
"But you NEED me."
"Yes...yes I do. God help me."
Not to mention, Sherlock and Lestrade have such wonderful chemistry, and their banter definitely puts on a lighter tone to some of the dark themes that sometimes occur in the series.
"Well don't take it personally, Sherlock, but I always feel like screaming every time you walk into the room." Unfortunately, at the end of Reichenbach, Lestrade starts to lose faith in Sherlock and starts believing two of his other colleagues when they hint that Sherlock may be involved in a case. When he arrives at 221B Baker Street with the arrest warrant, you can tell he looks so pained by what he is about to do. However, I have my suspicions. I think Lestrade knows Sherlock faked his death.

30 Days of Sherlock: Favorite Main character

Kelly: My favorite character is John Watson, for a lot of reasons. His back story is the first one you see right in the beginning of the series. Army veteran, invalided from home, clearly showing physical (mostly psychosomatic but they appear that way) and emotional scars from his time in Afghanistan. He is introduced to Sherlock by a mutual friend of theirs when the question is asked "who would want me for a flat mate?" (Well...I would for starters!) It is at this first meeting that Sherlock is able to deduce John's time in the service, along with the fact he has an estranged sister, she's in a failed relationship and has poor drinking habits. The day after they meet, John is taken hostage by Mycroft and is offered a large sum of money to keep tabs on Sherlock.
"No."
"You're very loyal."
"No, I'm just not interested."

But he IS very loyal, even after knowing Sherlock for less than a day. It was said in the beginning of the first episode that John had "trust issues." But as the series progresses, you see the transformation of not only John as a person but their relationship changes. The relationship between Sherlock and John begins as merely colleagues and flat mates to friends. Best friends. Let's face it; John had nowhere to go after his time in Afghanistan. But he put his trust in Sherlock, even after warnings of him being a "freak" and being told to stay away from him. And another reason why I love John? He's a medical man, like me...except I'm not a man. Haha. Plus he's played by Martin Freeman who is without a shred of doubt one of my favorite actors! John is the type of person you would want on your side, trust me.

Holly: My favorite character is also John Watson, and I was going to add something, but Kelly has summed him up perfectly.  We all have that one person in our lives who we know has our back no matter what.  For Sherlock, that person is John: when it's all said and done, John is the only one who stays by Sherlock, even when his world is threatening to be destroyed bit by bit.  Sherlock is even annoyed with him by how much he is concerned about what others think of him, but the truth is that he cares so much about what others think of him because he cares so much about him!  John's fierce loyalty and trust for his friend is what makes him a great character to watch, and a great character to relate to.  I honestly cannot wait to see where, after the end of Reichenbach, their relationship will go from here.

30 Days of Sherlock: Your favorite episode

Before we get started, we'll give a brief intro. Holly and I started watching BBC Sherlock around this time last year, due to our current roommate being interested in it. Ever since we've been hooked! There are only two seasons; the third is due out supposedly in October, but the producers have neither confirmed nor denied this date. We decided to do this for the month of July because, if you don't know, Sherlock first started in July of 2010. Anyway, let's get started with 30 days of Sherlock!!!!!!!!

Kelly: I have two favorite episodes. The first one is The Great Game. The Great Game is the last episode in the first series, and I chose this one as my favorite because I think it is really well written. There are so many sub-plots and stories, yet they all come together in the end with a Sherlock, John and Moriarty show down. Plus it's when we are first introduced to Moriarty, and even though he is the antagonist of the series you really get to see his brilliance. It's the villain you love to hate! Also, in the beginning of the episode, I enjoy seeing the relationship between Sherlock and John start to form, and some of Sherlock's quirks start to come out. It's very amusing and a great episode!

My second favorite is the Reichenbach Fall, which is the last episode in the second series (each series only has 3 episodes). The acting in this one is absolutely incredible; you're 100% in within the first two minutes of the episode. Holly and I watched it last night, and I actually rewound after the title credits came on just to watch the intro again; yeah, it's THAT good. The end is also what sells it as well, as last night I realized something. Throughout the series we see that Sherlock is often very cold, doesn't care to show "feelings" and is rather arrogant. Without trying to spoil so much, I think that he did what he did because he cared about his friends. The reason I don't want to spoil so much is because I guarantee that at least one of our readers will start watching the show by the end of this 30 day sequence. Challenge accepted!

Holly: One of the reasons I love being a twin is that while we usually love the same things, we have very different reasons as to why we usually love the same things.  This is one of them.

I have a two-way tie for my favorite episode, and they both fall in season 2: A Scandal in Belgravia and The Reichenbach Fall.  Scandal is the first ep in season 2, and one of the main reasons I enjoy this story is because we start to see what is, in my opinion, a season-wide revelation of Sherlock's human side.  When Sherlock first meets Irene Adler, he can't "deduce" her.  He even glances over to John to make sure he can still use his powers of deduction; he can, but with Irene, it's a big mystery.  Proof that he isn't immune to the opposite sex (aren't we all??? lol).  Later, when she is presumed dead, he falls into what one might see as a depression: he starts composing sad violin music and doesn't eat.  He denies it up and down later, but we all know that Sherlock did fall in love with Irene Adler, even if it was just for a short time.  The way it's written and portrayed just adds to the beauty.

We just watched Reichenbach last night, and what strikes me the most about this episode is how Sherlock and John's relationship has progressed from the pilot to now.  In the pilot, John is nobody, Sherlock's flatmate, "colleague" and not much else.  It goes to the opener of Reichenbach, where John is talking to his therapist, and it takes everything in him to muster out "my best friend, Sherlock Holmes, is dead."  It's not just his friend...it's his BEST friend.  He is visibly shaken and deeply hurt by the loss of his friend.  In six episodes, they're merely flatmates to friends.  John's soliloquy at Sherlock's grave at the end is just so powerful: "I was so alone, and I owe you so much"; he's later pleading for him to not be dead.  Honestly, it's so raw and real it makes me ache inside.  I really can't wait to see how John will react in the third season opener; part of me wants him to just beat the living snot out of him, help him up, and then just hug him.  Really hard.  All will be revealed in time, I reckon.
