Dwelling on the negative simply contributes to its power

Kelly: Haters gonna hate, but love will overcome. This is very pertinent to the events of today. In the choir that sis and I are involved in, some words that were spoken have stirred some controversy. I admit, when I first heard what was spoken, I was offended. But, because like the negative comments that have been said, I was misunderstood. I can say proudly that I am not anymore. God was THERE yesterday, whether or not people accept that. He. was. THERE.

That being said, I am keeping my end very simple. I am not going to feed into these negative comments that have been said, or lack thereof. If there is a problem, I believe in facing it. I hope that these people who have been saying these negative comments no longer misunderstand us and what BME is about. But if not, I hope they at least know that God loves them, no matter what. And...I am finished.

Holly: Without beating a dead horse, I can't really say anything that hasn't already been said.  I don't think we've seen the end of this.  But I sincerely hope that our beloved BME choir will hold tight and strong to our mission, to our integrity, to the hope in the lives that we have changed.  I think that is stronger than the impact of any words.

Hasn't changed a bit

Holly: I know we just blogged yesterday, but too much good has happened not to share! ^___^

Kelly and I spent the day having our spring break scheduled "sister date".  Yes, we had so much planned this week that we scheduled a sister date.  Sue us.  We visited our high school alma mater today.

Yup, good ol' Federal Hocking.  Seems like ages ago that Kelly and I graduated (2008...so it wasn't THAT long ago).  Anyway, we hadn't visited since just starting out at Berea and after Mom ran into some of our ex-teachers, we figured we'd pay everyone a little visit.  It was so wonderful to reconnect with some of our favorite high school teachers!!! They were so excited that we were almost finished with school, trying to figure out what to do with our lives, and I graduating very, very soon!  As Kelly and I wandered the halls hunting people down, something that kept coming to us is "Wow, this place hasn't changed a bit."  Suddenly we were transformed back into wide-eyed 15-year-old freshmen!

Yeah, high school wasn't a picnic for us (being in marching band, science olympiad, and mock trial puts you at the very bottom of the social totem pole), but seeing everyone today reminded me that we had some pretty great times in high school.  I miss having the teachers I ran into today.  I miss the innocence of high school; you didn't have to have all the answers!  Kelly and I were welcomed with open arms as we opened the doors of the seemingly-forgotten halls of Fed Hock.  I will never forget that.  I hope to visit again before we make our big move.

P.S. An unrelated bit of good news: JOB INTERVIEW NEXT WEEK! Sometime.  Not sure yet! BUT IT'S A JOB INTERVIEW!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Kelly: I admit, I was a little skeptical walking into the doors, just because it has been so long. How in the world were people going to react to us two geek burgers walking in through the double doors on a Thursday afternoon? But it was just like old times; picked up right where we left off. We filled everyone in with our potential move, apartment finding, college hustle and bustle, and of course, me and the fact that I still have one more long and painful year of nursing school left to endure. But it will be here before I know it!

After our high-school rendezvous, we hit town and did some mini shopping. What I distinctly remember about today (other than sis getting a high-five from our former Spanish teacher) was listening to a song on the radio and thinking about good times from long ago. When we were still in youth group in high school we would go to this big weekend outdoor concert thing that was SUPER AWESOME. There was one band that was playing their well-known song called "Washed by the Water." As soon as the chorus started, it began POURING.

Even when the rain falls
Even when the flood starts rising
Even when the storm comes
I am washed by the water

On the way home today, it had been sprinkling on and off. When that song came on the radio I said to Holly "wouldn't it be funny if it started raining?" Turned out I had been thinking the same thing too. I realize that my contribution has nothing to do with Holly's, but it just made me think. We have worked very hard to get where we are today, and the roads we have taken have not been easy. But we were both reminded we've got a large cheering squad here at home that are rooting for us! Yes, we have been hit with personal rain storms and floods, but they wash away and good times come forth. Ok, enough of my platform today. Yay for good times!

The Journey Begins...

Kelly:  When I first started college at Berea, I had this big dream to go back home, live in the city and work at a big hospital. It's funny to me how plans can change over a course of time. If I were a freshman and someone told me I would end up wanting to live in Berea, I would have told them they were crazy.

Now I'm the crazy one. lol

With Holly graduating in a few months and me still continuing my education, we sat down over Christmas break and had a few conversations. We had both been entertaining the idea of staying in the area and me living off campus during my last year in school. Talked about it to the folks, and they were on board with the idea. Talked with some friends, and they were on board with the idea too. So the research began. Last semester Holly and I started looking up various apartments and writing down their phone numbers so we could contact them. The contacting started today...

...two voicemails were left. I was an idiot and left the notebook with all the numbers written down at school...in my desk. I went into the shower this morning and when I came out sis told me nobody answered. Guess they were busy with lunch. Holly just now got off the phone with one of our potential living spaces.

WE'RE LOOKING AT A PLACE NEXT TUESDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holly:  *gah* *spaz* *panic* *holycrapisthisreallyhappening*

YES. YES IT IS!

This is the best spring break ever!!!!!!!!!! :D  And the lady sounds so nice and the apartments look so nice too! :)

Like Kelly, I never imagined living somewhere like Berea.  I had plans to become a small animal vet and move to the Carolinas (our family goes to North Myrtle Beach every year and there's a vet clinic nearby.  I would always say, I'm going to work there!).  But plans change.  Big time.  As my education has progressed, I've come to the realization that maybe my heart belongs elsewhere, not in vet medicine.  I mean, it's always there, and perhaps my plans will change again.  But let's just be frank: if I were to apply for vet school right now, they'd take one look at my application and throw it away.  So where I'll be, I don't know.  But I'd say that God is turning the tables in our favor so far! :)  And as it stands, I can't imagine being anywhere else other than Berea!!

Stay tuned!

Home sweet home for a little while

Holly: The TV is on, which is something I'm not really used to.  There's a slight chill in the house.  I look outside my window and don't see any street lights or hear the sounds of narcoleptic students being unreasonably loud at unreasonable hours.  No traffic.  No sirens.  No noise.

Home.

Yes, spring break has arrived.  Yay!  Don't get me wrong, I'm practically Berea's number one fan, but I'm so ready to just be away for a while.  Although I really don't get that much of a break: I'm working on a lab notebook for one of my biology courses (that's 300-level but feels like a graduate level), reading a book for my biology capstone (that's 400-level but feels like a 100-level...I am NOT complaining, by the way), apartment-searching (although my sister is a goob and left the majority of the phone numbers at school.  Hey, ya gotta start somewhere, I reckon), continuing the ever-arduous job search,  and starting the even more arduous task of packing up some of my stuff here so I can get the bleep out of my parent's house in May (can you be excited and scared at the same time???????? I say yes).

And it's only a week.  Stay tuned.  :)

Kelly: Well as for me, this really won't be much of a break. I still have a lot of homework to do...BLAAAAH. Oh well, no rest for the weary I suppose. However, I have devoted some of the break for some quiet time with sis and my best friend. And once I get back on campus I will hopefully be rejuvenated enough to tackle the rest of what the semester holds for me!

During this break we are also taking another bold leap; starting the process of moving out! Yes. One day this week we will be spending it by sorting our stuff; keep, sell and toss. We hope we are successful and don't have as much to bring back to Berea...cross your fingers for no U-Hauls!!!! Also keep your fingers crossed that this week I hear about my CNA job and we also find a place to go in Berea. That is also on the agenda...even though we will only have 3 apartments to call since I am a ree-ree and forgot the apartment book of phone numbers in Berea in my desk drawer. Oops. And it's for this reason why we can't have anything nice!

That's all to report for now. We are looking very forward to this time off!

Something Wicked This Way is Coming...

Holly and Kelly: This will be a post under constant editing, as a LOT of bad stuff is about to go down in a matter of hours...

As of 11:30 today, Berea cancelled classes and work, instructed non-essential faculty and staff to head home, and told students to seek shelter as soon as possible.  A massive storm cell is heading our way.  There is a very strong possibility of tornadoes (something that hasn't happened in about 15 years).  Right now we are watching the Weather Channel and constantly updating our Facebooks and Twitter feeds to keep our friends and family back home informed.  All is calm at the moment.  We are safe.

K: Currently is it 12:56 PM. The big nasty storms are in Paducah, Kentucky (about 5 hours away from us). Holly and I are camping out in the lobby in front of the TV with the weather channel on.

H: 1:02PM.  My roommate Amanda pants just got accepted to study abroad in Austria this summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

H: 1:07PM.  The National Weather Service in Louisville issued a Tornado Watch in our area until 9pm tonight.

K: 1:30 PM. Temporarily re-located to our favorite coffee joint for afternoon pick-me ups. A French-Mexican roast coffee for me and a Thin Mints latte for Holly. Sunny skies outside. Um...

H: 2:55PM.  Skies are fluctuating between sunny and cloudy, but all is still relatively calm.  Kelly is working on nursing stuff.  I'm filling out a job application for an Admissions position at the college.  Keep your fingers crossed!!!

K: 4:20 PM. Skies are getting darker and the wind is starting to pick up. Tornado warnings are issued in Fort Knox, Kentucky (about 2-3 hrs. away from here) and in Maryville, Indiana (north of Louisville, which is about an hour and a half away from here). We are sitting vigilantly by the window and checking the weather cautiously. We're getting ready; I think they'll be here soon.

K: 4:29 PM. Storm sirens are going off now as I type this. Severe thunderstorm warning underway.

H: 4:49PM.  Tornado warning siren has been sound.  We are now in the basement.  Yes...tornado warning.  Will update as soon as something changes.

H: Just as "all clear" was said, a second Tornado Warning siren sound.  We're back in the basement.  It is quite cloudy and windy outside.  Stay tuned.  And we're ordering new earrings!

K: Campus security just emailed us. An email was just sent out; a tornado has been spotted IN Berea. Yes, IN Berea. We are stuck here until further notice. I'm calling my mom.

H: 6:16PM.  A 6:15 tornado warning has now expired.  Another tornado warning has been issued and is set to expire at 6:45.  There have been several reports of tornadoes touching down IN Berea, including a few that were spotted on campus.  As far as I know no one has been hurt.  We're still in the basement, still waiting.

K: 6:51PM. A fourth tornado warning has been issued until 7:15 PM tonight. In addition, we are also under a flash flood warning until 9:45 PM tonight. We're getting a little restless, hungry, hot (you cram 40+ girls in a tiny basement) and cranky. Mostly just because we're hungry. Getting kind of tired of eating animal crackers and fruit snacks. Two girls just walked in with Chinese take-out. Um, really? And the night in the basement of Talcott continues...

H: It's now just before 8:30 at night.  The "all clear" for the last time was given about an hour ago.  Like a cookie-cutter disaster movie, us bleary basement refugees braved the balmy weather to the outside world...for FOOD!  It was yummy.  I am full of food and I am blessed to be reporting good news: no injuries, no significant damage (that I'm aware of).  Thanks for keeping up with us.  :)

K: 8:27PM. All is well in the world of Berea again. It's quite breezy out and it has stopped raining. After being stuck in that small basement for so long I was happy to get out. Me, sis and a friend of mine braved the lack thereof severe weather and gorged ourselves in pizza, pasta and chicken wings! As for now, I am settled back in my 2nd floor cove, sipping on Sierra Mist and listening to wonderful music. Thanks for keeping up with our continuous updates and checking in on us. I am happy to report that we are very much alive and well. :]

The 99%

Kelly: As I was checking my Yahoo! email, I came across this article. It's about this banker. Just read it; then read my comments.

This guy is in the 1%

EXCUSE ME?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I think I just threw up in my mouth. More and more I am understanding what this "1%" consists of. And more and more I am incredibly despised by it. It literally makes me sick to my stomach that there are people in my country that live like this. And now for me.

I make $5.50 an hour working a simple desk job; part of the package deal at Berea is you have to work. Speaking of which, I get paid on Friday. Half of my earned paycheck will automatically be deducted to pay off the $485 (give or take)  worth of books and other course fees. 5% of that will go towards my church on Sunday because I have been slacking in tithing so for now I am starting smaller. I am paying for my own cell phone and my own food. I also owe sums of probably a couple thousand dollars in bills that currently I cannot afford, thus I have sent them home for my parents and I to try to come up with how I am going to pay them.

Every day I thank God that I have a roof over my head, food in my stomach and at least some money to get by. Dear America, we have GOT TO STOP BEING SO SELFISH. We have it MADE compared to what most do not have. End rant.

Holly: It just makes me sad because these 1 percent-ers really don't know how it feels to just barely make it by.  I mean, that's pretty much a prereq for getting into Berea: you have to be poor.  I'll be frank, growing up I didn't have to worry about not having clothing, food, or electricity.  But I know plenty of people who did.  And I've seen $50 in my parent's bank account before.  I've seen them make sacrifices for Kelly, my brother and I.  I would HARDLY consider $350,000 a year and wanting to upgrade to an even bigger home and sending your kids to private school a "jam", just fyi.

"People who don't have money don't understand the stress."  The stress? Oh my, I don't even have a snarky comment for that.

Dear universe, MONEY DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING! Go spend time with your family, take up a hobby, partake in random acts of kindness, volunteer, adopt a stray kitty, whatever!  I absolutely cannot stand the fact that the majority of Americans have this "bigger, better, best, gotta-have-it-all, do-it-all, get-to-the-very-very-top-by-any-means-necessary-and-screw-the-rest-of-the-world" mentality.  It stinks.  As for Kelly and I, we're just trying to find out WHAT it all means!

Anyway, I'm going to enjoy the beautiful day and take the time to reflect on all that I DO have.  I hope you readers do too.  You'll find you're a lot more blessed than you realize, money or no money.  :)
