Adios to 2014: Looking ahead to 2015 and what's to come

Holly and Kelly: With the end of 2014 just 2 days away, we thought this would be a good time to wrap up our blogging for the year and look ahead to what the new year may or may not have in store for us. We decided to do this today because tomorrow we're packing up to head to Ohio, working, taking care of things before we ring in 2015 on the road. To start, 2014 was a great year for the two of us! We both experienced some firsts, went to a lot of concerts and met some awesome musicians who love the Lord, went to A Long Expected Party and bonded with fellow Ringers and bonded over why and how Tolkien's work has changed our lives for the better. Saw the end of an era with The Hobbit. Holly found a job that makes her happy (from Holly: finally) and as for me, even after thinking earlier this year I was going to lose my job found myself getting my act together and not only being a better nurse but just an all around better person. Having said that, here are a few goals we have laid out for 2015 and perhaps beyond:

Remember who we are and whose we are: A simple reminder that we are children of God and that God made us because He loves us so much! This point was in a sermon a few months ago and it has really stuck with us. It reminds us of what He has brought us through and that He will continue to provide our needs, no matter what they are. It reminds us to not worry about what may or may not happen but to really just trust in Him because He's going to take care of us!

"Let me get that." From another sermon that the youth pastor at our church gave. The youth group went on a mission trip earlier this summer, and this was their mentality and sort of motto in order to prevent burnout from a long week of hard work. For whenever we are feeling worn out and just tired, this simple phrase will hold with us to remember to always extend a helping hand, whether we're at work, church, home, wherever. This rolls into Romans 12:11-13, which starts out by saying never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. It's so easy to do that when you're doing something you love. It's easy for the two of us because we absolutely love our jobs. But even the best loved jobs have crappy days, and sometimes we really don't feel like being enthusiastic for Jesus. But we've found even the simplicity of just putting on a smile can go a long way. Give it a go.

Clean up song: I know some of you are thinking....ok, what? When we saw tobyMac last month, he was talking about when he was cleaning up the kitchen with his family he played one of his new singles as the "clean up song." We just looked at each other and were like...we need to do that. So before we clean up the kitchen or whatever, we pick a clean up song, usually a dancey one, and clean up while we sing, dance and whatnot. It's prevented a lot of arguing about who does what and it makes the mundane tasks more fun!

Eat at the table: I know this seems simple, but we rarely eat dinner at our dining room table. We did this while growing up as kids, and it helped us all reconnect with our days and just life in general. Granted, this won't be possible every night, but we're going to try and make it a regular habit.

So there you have it! We hope that 2014 has been great to you all and that you have some goals set for the new year to come. We'll close with a bit of this awesome song from for KING & COUNTRY and we hope these words encourage you. Thank you all for continuing to follow and read our blog! We can't wait for what 2015 has in store for us!

When I'm stuck out in the cold, let me be warm hearted
When the weight's too much to hold, let me be light hearted
When all I have is not enough, I won't be broken hearted
'Cause you taught me how to love, to live, to learn, to live whole hearted.

One Last Time

Holly and Kelly: Dear readers, we apologize for not updating in a while. It has been a very crazy month of going here there and everywhere. But we are fine, all is well and now we are back. Thanks for hanging tough and bearing with us.

Yesterday was the final hurrah. The big finale. The movie to end all movies. The Battle of the Five Armies. And it was glorious.  It was also a time of gathering. As you all know, in September we attended ALEP (see our post on ALEP weekend here!) and met some pretty awesome people during that time. It was discussed at that time that there was a group who usually met up in December to see the current Hobbit movie in Nicholasville (about an hour from Berea). This group met up at Shaker Village the night before for a merry gathering, since it's almost Christmas. So needless to say we jumped all over that! We stayed at the village Friday night and got to meet up with some of the folks we met in September for snacks, conversation, laughing, a long slideshow and a little bit of tasty wine. Come Saturday we rolled out to Brannon's Crossing in Nickyville and gathered at the theater for pictures and a bit of singing, such as Misty Mountains and I See Fire- which was pretty incredible. Before we knew it there were other people taking pictures and videos of all of us, as the majority of the group were in costumes. It was awesome. Truly awesome. We kept saying "I love us." This group, these movies, as Kelly said, it was a celebration of the Christmas season, the love of Tolkien and Peter Jackson's work, how the books/movies have impacted us and our lives, and celebrating each other.

Now for our movie opinion; we LOVED it!!! We don't want to give too much away, because that's just not nice and we went into this movie having read no reviews, not viewed any clips, or seen anything else other than just the trailer.  We expected a few things, naturally, just because we're fairly familiar with the book, but it far surpassed our expectations!  There were quite a few moments that really surprised us, and of course, there were things that we weren't too thrilled with (but that's the case with the previous 2 Hobbit movies, and even LOTR too).  But what really made this movie special, aside from it being the last Middle Earth hurrah, was the company that was able to witness this cinematic adventure with us.  Many we met from AL3P, but we didn't get to have as many in-depth conversations and fellowship as we had wished (though there was still plenty!!), so it was really memorable to share life with these people.  We all come from such different walks of life, such different parts of the world, and when we all come together united by this love for Tolkien, wonderful things happen.  Now every time we see Five Armies, we'll think of this group, this family that we've been so fortunate to be welcomed into.  Plus...Billy Boyd's closing song is complete perfection to the end of an incredible movie series...and to our parting.  We will see each other soon, though.  There is no such thing as goodbye!

So ends this day
The road is now calling
And I must away

Over hill and under tree
Through lands where light has never shone
By silver streams that run down to the Sea

Under cloud, beneath the stars
Over snow one winter's morn
I turn at last to paths that lead home
And though where the road then takes me, I cannot tell

We came all this way
But now comes the day to bid you farewell

Stories: A night of tobyMac (and others!)

Holly and Kelly: Keeping up with the spirit of concerts, our second concert in one week (Yes, you read that correctly.  We are blessed!) was on this past Friday night.  We bundled up, as it was quite, quite cold and after a pit stop at Five Guys for some food, we made our way over to a church in Lexington to see tobyMac and company.  It.  Was.  Packed!  We ended up having to park over at Mejier, which in relation to the church is a few blocks away.  But all of that is completely irrelevant.  The show was awesome!

The icing on this cake was that we got to share this experience with some folks from our church, which sweetened the deal, so to speak.  I (Holly) see a lot of folks who attend my church as family, so it was just one big happy familial gathering to us, and I know without a doubt Kelly and many others feel the same way.  Anyway, you don't want to hear me ramble on and on anymore.  The show opened with Ryan Stevenson, a fairly new artist in the CCM industry.  We are familiar with a couple of his songs via the radio, but it was really special to see just him, his guitar, and his voice.  His testimony is pretty incredible as well: One of his songs "Holding Nothing Back" was penned at a really difficult time in his life, including his mom passing away and he and his wife losing their twins.  It's amazing what God can do though.  It is.  He played four or five songs and he got a standing ovation when he was finished.  It made him cry!!!  What a powerful moment.  It's like something for KING & COUNTRY says "When you merge the power of music with the ultimate power of the Gospel, it not only has the power to change your day, but to transform your life as well."  A pristine example of that is what we saw at the opening.

After that was Matt Maher, whom we haven't seen since ICHTHUS of 2008, before he was really popular.  I loved his show then and I loved him this evening as well.  He played a new song "Because He Lives" and I think it's his best song yet.  Such simple words, but such a strong reminder of who God is and who we are in Him.  One of our favorite songs by him is "Lord I Need You", which is about a kajillion times better live.  Take my word for it!  We've been fans of his for a while so seeing him was an added treat to the already great evening we were having!

Finally, tobyMac came on!!! He has been around the block for quite a while now; he started out in a group called dcTalk back in the late 80's/early 90's with the current lead singer of the Newsboys (Michael Tait) and the former lead of Audio Adrenaline (Kevin Max).  Went solo not long after that and the rest is pretty much history.  We first saw him at ICHTHUS of 2006; we broke our curfew to wait in line and talk to him.  He's a super cool guy, y'all.  We saw him again at Winter Jam of 2010 (I think....), and it was a great high-energy show.  The show this past Friday was no exception whatsoever!  And it was loud.  Oh man, was it loud!  But it was such a great time.  I had completely forgotten just how big his heart is for God.  It was beyond inspiring!  He had a good mix of some of his older stuff, and some of his stuff that I know really well, as well as some new stuff, which I can't WAIT for his new album!  What was especially cool about the show is that he brought the previous "acts" back on from time to time to do some stuff with him.  One of my favorite songs by tobyMac, "Speak Life" was written by Ryan Stevenson!!! I didn't know that! Something that he said, though, and it's still with me: Someone walks up to you on the street and asks who are you.  There are a million different answers to that: a sister, a Christian, a friend, a twin, a doctor, a mom, and the list goes on and on.  The only "label" that matters, though, is that we, YOU, are a disciple that Jesus loves.  In the Bible, John referred to himself as "the disciple that Jesus loved".  Guess what? We are the same!  How cool is that? :)
My favorite picture!

Definitely a memorable evening, beyond all reaches of the imagination.  An added bonus: We got to hang out with Ryan Stevenson after the show for a few minutes.  He is unbelievably sweet!  I posted a couple songs below.  I hope that you are encouraged, both by the stories on this page and the stories in your own life.

Ryan Stevenson- Not Forgotten

tobyMac- Speak Life

Matt Maher- Because He Lives

Here we are with Ryan Stevenson afterwards! :) Thank you to the nice lady in line behind us for taking the picture

Burger and Chips; it's a Fine Fine Life, and guess what? YOU Matter: A night of for KING & COUNTRY

Holly and Kelly: For the 3rd time this year, we saw for KING & COUNTRY last night.

If you remember, this was the same band we saw at the 4th of July concert in Winchester. Back near the end of September, I was randomly browsing and then I (Kelly) checked my email (we signed up to receive their emails after the Winchester concert) and found out they were coming to Lexington. Yup. All over that one! I mean seriously, we love these guys. Not only do they love Jesus, but they love their fans too! Before we left for the concert, they posted on Facebook that they were going to leave tickets at the will-call center FOR FREE for anyone who wanted to go for themselves, friends or family but couldn't afford them. Yeah. Does your favorite band do that? Would your favorite band do that?

We took a good friend of ours, who didn't want to go at first because of the cost and such, but I (Kelly) said "I will buy your ticket and your dinner because I just really want you to see this concert because you will be so blessed by it." Needless to say, we both got several thank-yous (and if you're reading this Matthew, you are so welcome!) But one of the other things that got us sold was their support of Compassion International. In case you don't know what they are, Compassion is an organization that sponsors children that live in impoverished areas of the world. Sponsorship pays for medical care, food, schooling and for these children to receive the Gospel at their local churches. Luke, one of the brothers in the band, is a big supporter of this organization, and so finally, after seeing them 3 times, we finally decided to become sponsors ourselves. We are now sponsoring 5 year old Perla from the Dominican Republic :) We are thankful to God that a portion of our earnings will be going to this little girl so she can grow and know that somewhere in the world she is loved not only by us but by a God so big and loving. If you have any questions about sponsorship or want to sponsor a child yourself, please go to Compassion International's website and get connected.

Anyway, so the concert lasted close to two hours and afterward we waited 45 minutes to meet Joel...again.  I of course (Holly) just had to ask if he remembered me from Winchester (you can read the entire story here...which you should :) ).  Guess what y'all? He did!!!  In fact, he gave me a high five and said "Rock on!  I can tell that it's been loved."  You all, if I could just describe the feeling.  alkdsjbzskjdfng!!! The icing on the concert cake was that they opened the show with my FAVORITE song, "To the Dreamers".  Give it a listen.  You will be encouraged! :)

Like we said, last night was the third time we've seen them this year, and it just blows me away at how much more I fall in love with their music, their message, their stories, every time I see them.  I'll say it again: if you have not yet seen them live, you really need to.  I'm serious.

Run wild. Live free. Love strong.

Holly and Kelly: Today. one of our favorite bands, for KING & COUNTRY, released their second album.  You may have remembered us mentioning them during that one time during the 4th of July concert where Holly ended up with Joel's bracelet and it was kinda awesome.  So we've been listening to it...pretty much all day, and there's a monologue towards the end of the record that has just resonated with us so powerfully.  We wanted to share it with you all.  Take some time to reflect on the words, and please listen to the album if you can (it's on Spotify); really fun music with an awesome message!  Be blessed!

Run wild.  To risk everything, to hold nothing back, to lay it all on the line: your reputation, your success, your comfort.  It's that moment when fear is overcome by faith.  Live free.  It's not the liberty to do whatever you want, whenever and wherever you want, but rather, it's living in accordance with the author of humanity, and finding freedom by connecting with the Creator who conceived you.  Let the light flood into your eyes for the first time, feeling the blood course through your veins, finding the truest version of yourself by knowing the One who knows you even better than you know yourself.  Love strong.  Because you were first loved.  Because without love, we all perish.  Because the earth and the stars can and will pass away, but love; love will always remain.

Introducing....Spout!

A spotlight on Christ. An outlet to plug in and share life.

Holly and Kelly: Our church has a great youth program, starting as early as babies up to high school, in addition to an AWANA program that has garnered a huge amount of success. Our church also has a great variety of adult programs that meet throughout the week. We have Men's Sunday, Women's Sunday, Deacon Ordination Sunday and Youth Sunday. We have a Sunday School class for college students.

And that's it.

This is where we come in.

Starting in October, the two of us will be having a home-based small group for college students/young adults. The purpose is to have in-depth discussions based on Scripture and to fellowship with one another in other ways.  College is a crucial time, and while we want to have a Christ-centered focus, we also want to extend Christ's love and hospitality to those who choose to become a part of this group.  If a student wants to come over and hang out, has a question about a class or professor, is facing a faith challenge, or just needs a ride to Wal-Mart, we want to be there for them as much as possible during this time.  It is also a chance for us too, because we feel this responsibility, because let's face it, that's what it is, has been called upon us by God and we have decided to take the plunge and obey Christ. We have no idea what to expect, how many students will come, if any, and what sort of needs these students may have. But we're willing and ready to face whatever may come of it. We're excited, a little bit anxious, but have prayed and consoled with other Christians we trust and we feel this is a step in the right direction.

Maybe this is what following and obeying Christ is really about.

Now, a quick disclaimer: We are NOT, repeat, NOT leaving Berea Baptist.  We love our church and still value and cherish the relationships we have there.  We still love being in the choir and don't foresee that changing for a long time.  We have NO ill-will towards the church what. so. ever.  We simply see this need that the church possesses, and we feel that God has called us to try to meet that need.  We love the messages every week and are deeply encouraged and challenged. We can't predict the success of this upcoming endeavor- only God can.  And we're trusting Him to see this through.

So that's it. We appreciate your support in this decision we have made, and we are so thankful that it was at this church where we felt this need was started. The picture on the bottom is a tiny bloom, and we thought that was fitting. We want to help these young people grow, and in turn we will grow as well.

Three cheers for H and K!!

Holly: Ach!! That magical all-elusive date has come and gone again!  How time just seems to march right on by.

Yesterday was August 20th, THE THREE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF OUR BLOG!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D YAAAAHHHOOOOOOYAAAAAAYYY!!!

I still can't believe we're chuggin' along, and that we are.  They say "what a difference a year can make" and what a year it has been!  It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating 2 years of this blogosphere of wonder and now here we are again, 3 years strong.  3 years of not running out of stuff to talk about.  Imagine that! So much has happened this year and we still have so much more to look forward to!

I think we're going to keep at it.  In fact, there is no "I think"; we ARE going to keep at it.  Thank you all, once again, for chuggin' along with us.  Here's to many more years!

Kelly: Trying to type this with a kitty on my lap (a Yoda kitty to be more specific) will be most interesting. Like I say every year when this comes up, I never thought it would make it another year. This has been the first full year of our lives we are both working "full time" and neither one of us are in school. It's been fun and awesome and by far the most crazy! Hard to believe how fast the time seems to go, and it feels like this year went by the fastest. But yeah. 3 years. This blog idea was born after the two of us came home from our respective abroad endeavors and decided this would be not only fun for us but a bonding experience too. We have enjoyed coming back to this blog, even though we haven't been able to post as much in a while, but still. This isn't just for us, but all of our readers too. We want this to be a safe place to read our thoughts and to explore your own thoughts on the topic at hand. We don't do this to get it out there and see how many people will follow it in one day, no.

That's one of the great things about this blog and the fact we write it together; there's always something to talk about! Often I see stuff on the news or hear something on the radio and still after all this time tell myself "that would be good to blog about." And we do this too with conversations we have. So there you have it. Three years! Here's to hoping we'll have a four year post next year!

August 20, 2011- date of blog launch

August 20, 2012- one year after blog launch
August 21, 2013- two years and one day after blog launch
Today! August 21, 2014- three years and one day after blog launch.  With Yoda :)

God's Not Dead!!

Holly: Kelly is banished from reading this post until she sees this movie.  Which is looking like Wednesday night at this point.  Because I WILL see it again.  So Kelly, if you're reading this, stop.  Stop now.  Moving on...

Today I saw "God's Not Dead".

I hadn't heard about it, really, until about a month ago.  I'd seen posts about it mostly on Facebook and Twitter, and just a couple of days ago it was really brought to my attention.  Some members of my church were planning on getting together and seeing it because it was showing in a theater nearby.  I was interested, so I took a ticket.  Watched the trailer.  Admittedly was not all that impressed.  Honestly.  Not all that impressed.

Remember how I blogged earlier about how I wish I could travel back in time and smack myself across the face? (I promise I'm not a violent person..?).  Yeah....

First off, I believe that every single college student in America needs to see this movie.  I'm completely serious.  For those of you who don't know much about this movie, the jist of it goes like so: a college freshman enrolls in a philosophy class taught by an outspoken atheist professor.  He has the class write "God's not dead" on a piece of paper, sign it, and hand it in, thus avoiding debate and debacle between philosophical ideas and theist-based ideas.  One student, a Christian, refuses.  The professor challenges the student to defend the "antithesis", so to speak, that God is, in fact, not dead.  Through this, the student is challenged, his relationships fall apart, and he is belittled and threatened by the professor.  There are numerous other character storylines that all intersect as well; many of the characters either don't believe in God at all, or do, but are keeping it secret.  And yet, at the end, all are affected by Him in some shape, size, form, or fashion.

My first thought was what would I do if I were in that student's situation.  I'd like to think that I would take a stand for God, but the sad truth is that I'm not entirely sure what I would do.  I immediately began thinking of my own college days.  While my faith was challenged, yes, I was never publicly belittled, threatened, or forced to believe in something I didn't.  Maybe none of us would every really know what we would do.  God has a time and a place for everything.  One of the things the student kept saying throughout the movie was "I feel like God wants me to do this."  I suppose that, given the circumstances, I would know what God would want me to do.

The biggest take-home message, for me, was this: every single moment is precious, and our time on this earth is limited.  We don't know how much time we have left.  I would say that the storyline that really struck me was that of the atheist professor.  Without giving too much away, all he has for God is hate, but I won't disclose why...spoilers (for which that argument is rebuked by "How can you hate someone that doesn't exist?").  Literally at the last possible second does he see the light of Christ and turn to Him.  I wasn't expecting it to end the way that it did, which is why it probably struck me as much as it did.  Life is so short, too short.  In light of this, I will say that I realize that I don't act as Christ's ambassador as much as I should.  I don't speak or act for God as properly as I should.  I don't reflect God's likeness as I should.  Yeah, I've had people tell me that they can tell I'm a Christian because of how I act, how I handle stress, etc, but it's not good enough to just be "good enough" anymore.  I pray that God will use me, and anyone else who sees this movie, to shine for Him, to stand for Him, to witness, to be brave.  I'm doing my best to live for Him, and I pray every day that others will see Him.  I will keep praying that prayer.  Always.

My God's not dead, He's surely alive!

One of the lines from the movie was how that we might be the only meaningful experience with Christ that someone will experience.  We only get one chance.  I'm praying that my faith will be strengthened and that God will shine through me.

Wrap up: Run, do not walk, to your nearest movie theater and go see this movie!!! Please!  You will not be disappointed.  God is awesome and this movie was a great reminder of how God works in awesome ways.  P.S. It features the Newsboys (briefly), and I've met them before.  They're super cool- Duncan the drummer follows me on Twitter.  Seriously!  Oh, and there's Duck Dynasty too.  Which (I guess???) is kind of a big deal nowadays :)

Took me a little while to write this post- I have my own personal editor :)

Empty pages and open books

Holly: I'm challenged by the message I heard today at church.  To sum it up in very, very basic terms, we as Christians are called to act.  Early on, we were asked that if we had our "book of Acts" written out, what would it look like? Would it be worth reading? (referring to the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament).  I believe mine would look something like this:

Chapter 1: Holly starts going to church with her family.  Gets baptized when she's 10 years old.
Chapter 2: Holly goes to a different church with her family.
Chapter 3: Holly goes to church on Sunday and youth group on Wednesday.  This continues for several years.
Chapter 4: Holly goes on a mission trip to Nicaragua, and her mind and eyes are opened, her heart is full, and her spirit and faith are renewed.
Chapter 5: Holly goes to church on Sunday and youth group on Wednesday.  Decides Berea College is THE place to be.
Chapter 6: Holly survives her first few weeks of college, but then realizes that something is just not quite right with her and God.  After a long October night, and a long conversation between her, her sister, and God, she decides to start over with God.
Chapter 7: In May of 2009, Holly and her sister rededicate their lives to Christ, in front of their new church family.
Chapter 8: The years pass.  Times are great, times are hard, and Holly's faith journey is an up and down tirade of events, lessons, truths, prayers, introductions to Lord of the Rings and other things and people that strengthen her faith, etc, etc, etc.  But through that, she has grown with a church family that loves her, built relationships with numerous individuals, tried many different avenues for quiet time, and has done a lot of journaling...among many other things.  She realizes she has such a long way to go, but also recognizes how far God has brought her.
Chapter 9: ???

And that's where I am now.  I know that I am called to act, but to be honest, I don't know where to go from here.  Every day is a step of faith that I must take, trusting that God will walk with me and give me the discernment to make godly decisions and act in accordance with Him.  I don't know what my future holds.  But I thank God that He does!

The title of this post is "Empty pages and open books".  I'm continuing to write my "Acts" on empty pages, because there are so many possibilities out there.  The bible says that with God, all things are possible.  Walking with God is an adventure, and when He extends his unrelenting grace at the start of every day, He is opening His books of possibilities and choices for us.

Kelly: I came up with the title of today's blog based off a song in which the first line of the chorus goes "I'm an empty page. I'm an open book." God is ultimately the author of our stories and He writes our story. In my experience, mine has been full of uncertainty, tremendous joys and successes as well as darkness and despair. If I could title my story, it would be called "But God..." In my college days in the gospel choir we sang in our director, who was full of life and the Spirit, would often say "BUT GOD!" when a student shared a struggle or when we all got together in prayer and prayed for whatever was laid on our hearts. My role as a chaplain in that choir often had that two word phrase resonating in my head not as doubt but as hope. The word "but" usually precedes the "bad news" or something that isn't quite certain. In this case, it was a simple reminder for me to just stop and think "look at what God is bringing me through and what He brought me through." But God.

My story holds no powerful revelations. God hasn't spoken to me through burning bushes. I've never led thousands of people out of slavery, brought a dead man back to life, or calmed a storm with my hands. But God, that SAME God has written me a story that is like no other. My personality is God and only God; the joy of the Lord creeping up when needed. The truth is, I don't know what the rest of my story holds, but I know who's holding the pen, or at least I'm doing my best to get to know Him more and more. So should someone ever read my story, I'm not sure if it would be "interesting" or if anyone would actually want to read it. But that's the beauty of knowing other brothers and sisters; their stories are all different because we all serve the same God and He's made all of our stories different. I have seen God work in wonderful and mysterious ways not only in my life but in those around me. I've turned away from God and wanted to hold onto friendships that weren't meant to be, wanted to hear from jobs on my time, and say yes or no to whatever I wanted. But God welcomed me back each and every time, no questions asked. Ya'll, I'm not a perfect person, far from it. But when you get a not perfect person who is matched up with the perfect God who made her very existence here possible, that equals the greatest acts of faith, hope and love that nothing can buy. That to me is a story worth reading.

Winter feelings

Holly and Kelly: 2 days ago it was in the mid-40s and sunny! Yesterday it got to 49 with some more sun.  This morning we woke up to yet another round of snow (albeit not much, but still...AAGGHH).  This winter we have had more below-freezing days than we can remember.  We've had many mornings where it was below zero (yeah, -5 is not fun).  We've gotten REALLY good at driving ourselves out of skids, slides, black ice, crappy roads, etc.  We've had many close calls of wiping out on icy sidewalks, parking lots, front steps.  We've had near $150 electric bills (now that doesn't seem like much, but when our average bill is $50-60, yeah, that's a sucker punch to the checkbook).  Basically if we see any more snow we're going to go nuclear.

IT IS WARMER IN LONDON ENGLAND RIGHT NOW THAN BEREA KENTUCKY.  Just let that sink in.

We've had it with this winter crap, so now we're going to poke fun at it.  Enjoy these pieces of humor on your Saturday morning, wherever in the world you may be (Fun fact, just checked the 10-day...supposed to be in the 50s by Monday! Holla!!)

:)

No more!

Certain of certainty

Holly: Well met, readers!  We are 11 days into 2014.  I hope that you are all well, happy, enjoying your people, getting settled back into your routines, enjoying whatever new blessings have already come your way, etc.  Already I have found myself meditating on something I have, yes, learned in just a few short days of this year:

Nothing is certain.

No, really.  It isn't.  I have been mulling over so many possibilities in my head since the start of this year, and although I'm still not sure what to do, perhaps, sometime, I'll end up taking a risk.  For those of you wondering, no, I'm not quitting my job, so that's that.  But anyway, with things like this, you have to stay open-minded.  For example, I never imagined staying in Berea.  I had ambitions of moving to the Carolinas and working in a vet clinic down there.  Halfway through college, I realized vet school wasn't going to work out, and Berea was growing on me more and more.  Fast forward a couple of years: now I'm not in vet school, I'm living in Berea, quite happily, with no intention of leaving anytime soon, and I'm working as a lab coordinator for biology and I couldn't be happier.  I was so...certain...that I had everything figured out.  And now I am where I am, and next year, I could be somewhere different.  Who knows?  The only one that knows, and the only one that is certain, is God.  I'm going to continue praying, and trusting Him.  Stay tuned.  :)

Kelly: Things too have changed in a very short amount of time that this new year has started. I'm still trying to decide whether or not this is really God or if it's just me wanting or not wanting the circumstances to happen. I've hit a few bumps in the road at work, almost resulting in some pretty drastic changes. All is well now, and I'm doing my best to ensure it stays that way. Again, it reminded me that sometimes even though God gives us what we need, it's not always in the way we think it is. That was a hard pill to swallow, and it's one that I'm still learning how to deal with that one. But that's why God puts awesome people in your life; they're there for a reason.

Now onto that note. God does put people in your life for a reason, whatever those reasons may be.Just recently, I've delved into the possibility of starting a relationship. Yes, an actual one. Nothing has progressed yet; it's kind of a long story but we're both ok with the fact that things are the way they are now for a reason (being 1000+ miles away from each other also puts a damper on plans as well). But in about 2 years time things may change and we may move forward. But for now, we're ok with being good friends and perhaps a little bit more (nothing like THAT, ok?) I still miss him, a hecka lot, but in the meantime I'm doing the best I can. I think we both realized that something was potentially there, but again, like this post, I can't be certain of it. That's just the way it is sometimes. I think the mentality I'm going to try and have as this year continues is the fact that I don't know what will happen. I have to be open to whatever God may throw my way, and I have to be ready for it. I have to trust Him; it's the only other option I have. Last year I was between a rock and hard place, and I was certain that my own strength and willpower would get me through. How much do you want to bet how long that lasted? Keep moving forward, that's what I'm saying. So it goes.

2013: A reflection on lessons learned and some goals for 2014.

Holly and Kelly: This will most likely be our last post of the year 2013, and my how fast it has gone! We would like to take this opportunity to reflect on what we have learned in this past year and how we have grown as humans, sisters, and Christians.

Question God: Really. In a culture that is so bent upon NOT doing such, one thing we have learned is that it is ok to have a healthy questioning of God. We remember talking to each other and asking God "is this really what you want from us?" "Do you really have our best interests at heart?" "How much longer?" Trust me; He can handle it.

Don't be afraid to say no: No is no is no is no. It is a complete sentence, thus should not require explanation. Nobody's going to hate you. Seriously.

Nothing is permanent: This is both a good thing and a bad thing.

Be open-minded to new possibilities and/or challenges: If this were not so, we would have never gotten into Doctor Who. Give things a chance; you never know what you might find. Sometimes things get rough along the way. You can either let them knock you down or you can learn from them. As a result of this, we learned how to forgive loved ones (see below) and be our own people.

The people who are with you through it all are the ones to hold onto: You may think you have known someone your whole life, but when you need them the most they are nowhere to be found. Unfortunately, we learned this truth the hard way. But we're better because of it. We've gained and lost friends along the way, but there have been those few who have been there with us for a long time. Granted we don't get to see them that often, but they have still been there. We are thankful for those people; you know who you are.

Good things come to those who do wait: And they happen in His time, not ours. Right after Kelly graduated, we found ourselves unsure of what road was next. It was a very trying and unsettling time for us, but now things are good. Really good. That doesn't mean though we still need God, because we do.

Get angry: You would be amazed how easy it is to bottle those emotions up. Sometimes a healthy session of venting is ok. Cry out; to God, a friend, someone you trust. We too, like most of these lessons, learned this the hard way. Often times we would both be so angry or frustrated with the circumstances and just blow up at each other for no reason. The moment we stopped running (or trying to run) from what we were angry and frustrated with, the easier it was to deal with it. It wasn't easy at first, but over time it did get easier. It just takes time.

Remember to have fun: Call your friends and plan random get-togethers, just for the sake of doing in. When we first got our new jobs, we would just work and work and work and work, but didn't leave a lot of room for play time. Now random get togethers, even if it's just the two of us, happen at least once a month. Don't misunderstand us; we love our jobs, but sometimes it's nice to just take a break and have fun!

Sometimes letting go is the only way to move forward: Actually, this is a direct quote from an episode of "Smallville".  But in all seriousness, we learned this the hard way: earlier in the year we had a falling out from a friend that we were friends with for a long time.  Normally we would have run back and tried to fix everything, but this time, we decided enough was enough.  And that's that.  I think we held on for so long, even though we knew things had gone wrong a while back, because we thought we could fix things.  But sometimes people don't want to be fixed, and you have to accept that and move on.  So we did.  Of course we still think about her and, as always, we wish the best for her.

The ones we lose never really leave us.  On our 23rd birthday, we learned that our grandpa had passed away.  We did somewhat see it coming, but it nevertheless still saddened us.  Still, to this day, we see things, hear things, say things, that remind us of him.  He is with us, always, and he is with Jesus and his family, and we can't be sad about that.

Forgiveness doesn't happen overnight.  We've had some pretty rough family issues this year, and it's safe to say that things will never be the same.  Things have gotten better, yes, but we are still working on the forgiving aspect.  We always will, I suppose.  Forgiveness takes time.

You have to make time for the things that are important to you.  Pretty self-explanatory.  But even if it's just for five minutes, take time for yourself.  In a culture that is so fast-paced, we ought to.

Goals for the next year:

Give back to God.  This is something that Holly has felt on her heart for a while now, and eventually you have to put it into action.  We'll see what happens, but God blesses those who give all to Him, including their finances.

Read.  We've both enjoyed reading for FUN this year.  Yes, an actual book.  We anticipate to do more reading in the new year.

Reach out.  It's amazing how quickly the time passes and it turns into months and months without hearing from friends and family.  Even though it's a lame excuse, we really do get caught up in our busyness.  We're hoping that our reaching out will inspire others to reach out to their own loved ones as well.

Jump in. Ever see someone do something/say something but they just keep waiting and waiting? Ever asked yourself "what am I waiting for?" Well....just do it! Don't wait; the opportunity may not come again.

Remember that we're not alone. And neither are you. God is with us, and you, and so are so many others out there. Call upon Him, your family or your friends if you're hurting or struggling. We are going to do our best to do the same.

It's been an up and down year, 2013 has. Let's all do our best in making 2014 a little bit better!

30 days of Sherlock: Free for all #4

Holly: Kelly posted something on our Sherlock pinterest board about some things that are coming in the new season.  Something I'm looking forward to now (used to be the wedding) is the John/Sherlock meet-up.  And I directly quote from the brilliant evil genius himself (sorry Moffat, but you are evil.  And brilliant):

"...this is his favorite moment of Sherlock that he has made.  He states, 'It is the showstopper of the episode.' He believes this is what fans will want more than how did Sherlock survive."

Well duh! Because all those theories out there are going to be totally bogus! I'm ready for the aftermath!!!!

Kelly: Today I'm going to use my free for all avenue to talk about how excited I am for Season 3 to start! Though we still have until next year to see it, I am have total faith that it will be awesome! This past week, during the annual Comic Con in San Diego, thousands of people got to view a clip from the second episode of the third season. That clip, as I have read on multiple occasions, will not be viewed on the web. So us who didn't go did not and will not get to see it. And in a write up about the event, the clip was about the wedding that will occur in that episode. Sigh.

Yeah, I'm a bit bummed, but that's ok. We'll get our turn to see it and it will be so worth it!! I'm actually a bit on the flip side and sort of glad I didn't get to see it; I want to be surprised! Good things come to those who wait.

30 Days of Sherlock: Something you'd like to see in Season 3

Kelly: There are quite a few things in the third season I would like to see. First being in the premiere. I want Sherlock to reveal that he is alive to John. Well we do know that is going to happen but here's how I want it to be done; I want John to stand there, beat the snot out of him, help him up, then hug him. Secondly, I would like to see Harry, John's sister (short for Harriet). You hear a little bit of her back story in the first season premiere, and you also know that they have an estranged relationship. I don't know; ever since I heard about her it's just something more and more I would like to see. I would also like to see more of Sherlock's back story; how he came to be the person that he is now. I think it would be interesting, but we'll see. We still have about 6 months until Season 3 airs, so let the speculating wands be raised!

Holly: In the original head canon, when Sherlock returns after the fall, John faints.  If Moffat and Gatiss do that......I don't know.  John is a soldier.  I personally want him to deck Sherlock and then hug him.  I want Sherlock's "resurrection" to be completely unexpected (although I'm not sure we will have to worry about that).  I also want Mycroft to have had a part in it.  He knows way too much.  haha.  I want to see more of Molly's character.  She's a really good character and a good asset to Sherlock.

Last, and definitely not least, Martin Freeman's real life life partner is cast in the third season.  As who, we do not know.  I do not want her to be Mary Morstan.  Way too obvious.  It would be great if she was Harry.  I will be very disappointed if she is cast as John's future wife.  Not that I think they are both terrible actors; they aren't; I've seen them work together and they have great chemistry (Obviously.)  But still...

I also do not want to wait until 2014 to see Season 3.  To each his own, though.  Guess we don't have a choice.  >:P

An Unexpected Adventure (18 months in the making...)

Holly: We have committed the date September 27, 2014 to our memory.  No, we'll both be graduated by then.  No, it's not our prospective wedding dates.  It's not another failed-predicted apocalypse, the inauguration of a new president, the starting date of a new job, or even our 24th birthday.

It's this!

Yes, you are reading this correctly: an entire weekend full of Lord of the Rings enthusiasts, exhibits, frivolity, fun, food, laughter, relationship-building, autumn goodness...all literally a stone's throw away from our very home.    Since we are a bit financially strapped to partake in the entire weekend party, we have simply opted for a day pass; regardless, it certainly isn't hampering our enthusiasm any less!

Our registration has already gone through and been received, planning is already under way, we have until the 1st of September (of 2014) to make our payments (at just $30, I mean helloooooooooo??!?! Are you kidding me??!), and we are beyond excited!  BEYOND. Excited!  We are on the cusp of something we can't even imagine.  We are going to meet so many incredible, amazing, inspiring people, all from vastly different walks of life, heck, all from different parts of the country!  All sharing in this one thing, this one magical, beautiful thing.

I think even Tolkien himself would be proud!  :)

ikgfvuyh (Yoda agrees)

Kelly: It's funny that this happened. We were thinking of going to New York or another American city that is doing a premiere of the last movie. Not that we've completely ruled that out, but now we have something that is set in stone and definitely going to happen! I was so worried (and still am) that I was going to forget that this was happening. I'm thinking oh my gosh that's over a year away! I don't even know what kind of work I'm going to be doing, where I'll be living, whatever! So many unknowns. I did save my registration email though...just in case my big cracked brain lets it slip through.

I don't really know what to expect out of this. A jolly good time for sure. I hope that I meet a lot of awesome people who geek out on this too! My hope is though that even though this is very VERY exciting that I would not let it drive me. That I wouldn't be so obsessed and fixated on the fact that this is really happening that I lose focus. That I can concentrate on the now and what I need to do now, like GRADUATE...ahem. 2 months tomorrow!!!!!!! But once I get over that hump I can start to focus on those things. Taking it one day at a time...but I am really excited about this! And it'll be in the fall, the colors will be changing and the weather hopefully won't be too crazy. But yeah. It's coming! Super super excited!!!!
